New York state Assembly approves gay marriage bill

The Assembly voted late Wednesday the state to legalize gay marriage, but Senate leaders have not agreed yet to allow a vote on the bill. Before helping to draft law 80 to 63, Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton, D-Ithaca, gave an impassioned speech in the House of his brother, a gay man who died of AIDS in 1994 at age 37.”The more I thought about my brother, I did not know how I dare, how dare any of us believe that we are entitled to all rights, full equality, to someone like my brother, who was certainly a much better than me, “said Lifton. But after a four-hour meeting behind closed doors with Republican senators, Senate Majority Dean Skelos said he has decided to allow a Senate vote this session, which expires on Monday. Skelos said Republican senators to speak privately with the bill again today.”The problem was not resolved,” said Skelos, a Long Island Republican who opposes gay marriage.Republicans have a slim majority of 32-30 in the Senate, which could have an impact if the Senate votes again on the subject.
