Documento de retracción del Dr. José Rizal

According to Gregorio F. Zaide before the execution, Rizal signed a retraction. :-) The original document of this retraction is preserved in the archives of the Arzobispado de Manila. In this document, he gave up Masonry and returned to the Catholic faith. That is why before the execution he asked to wear again the medal and the blue ribbon of a Sodalist of the Virgen de la Paz and as he walked to the firing squad he held his rosary beads that is now preserved at the Ateneo de Manila Museum.

The Retraction of Dr. Rizal reads as follows:

"I declare myself a Catholic and in this religion in which I was born and educated, I wish to live and die.

"I retract with all my heart everything in my words writings, publications and conduct that have been contrary to my status as a son of this Catholic Church. I believe and I profess all that it teaches, and I submit to all that it commands. I abominate Masonry as an enemy of the Church and as a society prohibited by the Church. The Diocesan Prelate, as the highest ecclesiastical authority, may make public this spontaneous statement of mine, for this purpose of mitigating the scandal my acts might have caused, and so that God and men may pardon me.

Manila, December 29, 1896."
