Khardung la is NOT 18,340'- October 1977

Today Khardung La has a teeming bazaar like atmosphere and is filthy.

The height of Khardung La is 17,560 ft. It is thus not the highest motorable road in the world. For some time till 2003 the Highest Motorable Road was the one over a 19,200 ft high pass in Boliva. Then that road collapsed. Khardung la, according to the Survey of India 1: 50,000 sheet, is 17,559 ft high.

Several years ago the height that I had got from my Garmin GPS showed 5360.36585 or 17,582'. A higher pass with a regular bus service over it is in China. Its called Semo la { 5,565 m/18,258 ft}. But, as the Chinese do not seem to bother about such superficial things there are no claims or signboards. Read about it here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semo_La

The real Khardung la is about half a kilometer to the east of this pass and about 60 mtrs higher. This pass is actually called Som la.
