Galwan's House

In a corner of the Chute Rangtak stands this noble house of Ghulam Rasool Galwan- the famous caravan sirdar of the late 19th C and early 20th C.

Ghulam Rasool Galwan (means 'bandit') had accompanied many explorers like Younghusband, Littledales, Lord Dunmore, Major Roche and many others. He is, I think, the only person after whom a river has been named in the sub continent and Central Asia. As a recognition of his deeds and his efficiency he was made the Akasakal or Chief Assitant of the British resident Commissioner of Ladakh. He also wrote a book -in his own inimitable English- called "Servant of Sahibs" .It was published by Cambridge in 1923.

To Galwan Yarkand was his second home. He thought nothing of doing the 44 day trek to Yarkand from Leh to meet some Western explorer or the other. This 44 day trek itself was an adventure for many Western explorers.
