Pine Grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator)
New Hampshire
This could be either a female or juvenile male.
In winters with low seed and fruit crops in the north this species will move south in search of food.
New Englands residential and commercial landscape designs include a lot of ornamental Crabapple trees which attract flocks of this species along with other irruptive species, like the Bohemian Waxwing.
The Waxwings will most often swallow these smaller Crabapples whole but the Grosbeaks prefer to tear the fruit apart, often times leaving a blanket of red debris in the snow below the tree.
