Red Necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena)

North Dakota

I had spotted a pair of Red-necks in a roadside marsh as I passed by. Two problems existed, no shoulder or pull off and it was a typical ND paved highway 65 mph speed limit. So I proceded on to my destination a short ways up the highway and did some exploring. On the way back I could see for almost a mile and no cars were coming, it offered enough time for a quick stop and a few grab shots. Notice the little tuft of feathers on the back of it's head standing up. I didn't realize at first that they had a nest close by. Needless to say I high tailed it out of there for obvious reasons, first and foremost I did not want to keep either of the birds off the nest and secondly I had a real fear of getting rear ended.
