Harvester Butterfly (Feniseca tarquinius)

New Jersey

Had to get down on elbows and knees in a muddy stream bed for these images. Harvesters have a wing span of about an inch to an inch and a quarter. With wings closed like this half as much.. They seem much smaller when your trying to photograph them...

Harvester caterpillars are carnivorous, feeding on the woolly aphids that suck on beech and alder trees. Their North Americas only carnivorous butterfly species.

The proboscis of Harvester adults are very short, and they do not feed on floral nectar. Instead, they feed on aphid honeydew, dung, sap, and also sip from mud...

This species range appears to be from Manitoba Canada down through Texas, east to the Atlantic in North America.
