Striped Owl (Costa Rica)

The Striped Owl (*Asio clamator*) is a striking and relatively large owl species found throughout parts of Central and South America, including lowland forests, savannas, wetlands, and agricultural areas. It is easily recognized by its bold facial markings, large dark eyes, and prominent ear tufts. Its plumage is a mix of tawny, white, and dark streaks, giving it the "striped" appearance that inspired its name. A nocturnal predator, the Striped Owl primarily feeds on small mammals, birds, and insects, using its acute hearing and excellent night vision to locate prey. Its call is a distinctive, hooting series of notes that can sound eerie in the darkness. Though not often seen due to its secretive habits, the Striped Owl is a captivating presence in the ecosystems it inhabits and contributes to maintaining a healthy balance among small animal populations.
