QUEEN MARYS BOWER, CHATSWORTH HOUSE, DERBYSHIRE _6342x
Queen Marys Bower was built in 1550's by Bess of Hardwick & her husband Sir William Hardwick as a viewing and fishing platform set amid ponds and canals near Chatworth House. These water features were removed by Capability Brown when he relandscaped the estate in 18thC. The link to Mary Queen of Scots (imprisoned in house in 1550s to 1580s) is legendary rather than proven. The Bower was opened to the public in 2008.
The moat area is filled with water for the annual Horse Trials.
