Bacon's Castle
We eventually made our way to the Castle which wasn't really a castle at all but a very large, 3 stories tall brick home, built in 1665, it's the oldest brick home in the USA today actually. Nothing out of the ordinary though as far as looks go but it was interesting to hear about it's lengthy history. The original owner did not live long enough after building started to live in the house (he was 57) but his son did. This was my favorite room and it was in the basement. Before a separate building was added for a kitchen this is where the cooking was done. And because it was cooler in the basement it was also where many food stuffs were stored (there were several rooms in this basement). All the bricks used in the house were made by slaves on the plantation site. This really was an unusual Sunday adventure for Anita and I but we really enjoyed it.
