Mir Castle. Belarus.

Mir Castle is a defensive fortification and a residence in the town of Mir Kareličy district of the Grodno region of Belarus. The architectural monument, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 2000). Until 1568 the masters were Ilinichi, then the Radziwills (until 1828), the Wittgensteins (until 1891). The last owners of the castle were Svyatopolk-Mirsky (until 1939), after which the castle became state property.

 

The castle is similar in structure to the square with a side about 75 meters, in the corners are five-storeyed towers 25-27 m high that extend beyond the walls. The fifth tower is six-storied with an entrance gate. Mir Castle is the easternmost Gothic structure, as well as the largest and only non-cult object from the preserved few samples of original Belarusian Gothic.

 

The complex participated in virtually all wars that swept in their time on the Belarusian land: since the Russian-Polish war of 1654-1667. And before the Patriotic War of 1812, the castle was repeatedly siege and stormed it. It was damaged in 1665 and 1706, after it was rebuilt in the early eighteenth century. Then again it was badly damaged in 1794. In 1812, under the walls of the castle, a battle was fought between the Polish cavalry of General Rozhnetsky, who was part of the French army, and the rearguard of the 2nd Russian Army, the Cossack cavalry of MI Platov.

 

Since 1989, the branch of the National Art Museum of Belarus. In 2011 received the status of an independent museum.

 

Mir Castle is a stone structure, the main part of which was erected in the 16th-17th centuries in the immediate vicinity of the town of Mir. According to researchers, earlier in its place was located a feudal manor. The castle is surrounded by flat terrain, not far from the castle flows the Miranka River.

The exact date of the beginning of the construction is unknown, but it is assumed that it began no earlier than 1522.
