Old streetcar rails uncovered during street reconstruction at Broadway and Osborne in Winnipeg - May 10, 2012
A portion of the rails that Winnipeg's streetcars ran on decades ago has been exposed during street reconstruction at Broadway and Osborne Street. Plans are to have some of the rail removed and donated to a hoped-for museum devoted to streetcars.
Before 1955, Winnipeg Transit and earlier private companies ran streetcars on rail throughout the city as well as electric trolley buses. Electric streetcars began operating in the city in the late 1800s.
After the last streetcar was taken out of service in 1955, rails across the city were either torn out or covered with asphalt as streets were widened.
