Painted Lady Butterfly. Vanessa kershawi.

Widespread over the southern parts of Australia including Tasmania. Adults fly close to the ground with quick stuttering glides on horizontal wings. When attacked from predators they have an interesting escape reflex, folding their wings and plummeting to the ground as if dead. Males are said to have small territories defended from low perches. They are often observed chasing away the much larger Orchard Butterfly should they encroach into their territory.
