Happy Windmill Wednesday!
One of two wind farms near Douglas, WY. The company has worked to be proactive in saving migratory birds from death. They paid a fine and made restitution for 14 golden eagle deaths (among other migratory birds) on the two wind farms over three years. This amount totaled 1 million dollars. A radar system was installed to detect bird movement although it did not work well due to ground clutter. Now eagle watchers are positioned throughout the facility and they radio the control tower when blades need to be shut down. It takes two minutes to stop the blades and ten minutes to start them back up. Each shut down can cost the company 1/2 hour time.
