Hailes Castle (17)

The north side of Hailes Castle, facing the River Tyne, with the remains of the well tower on the left.

Following the forfeiture of James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, Hailes Castle went into a period of decline, a process accelerated in 1650 by Oliver Cromwell, who partly slighted the buildings after the battle of Dunbar, to prevent them being reoccupied in his rear (as Tantallon was).

In its latter years, Hailes passed through the hands of the Stewarts, the Setons, and finally, in 1700, the Dalrymples. By the mid-19th century the castle was being used as a granary, Sir David Dalrymple having taken advantage of the more settled times in which he lived, to move his family to the mansion of New Hailes.
