The Rajya Angan courtyard
After Haldighati, Pratap returned to the security of the Aravalli's forests and fought a guerrilla war against the Mughals. His dogged resistance and refusal to surrender even after being reduced to starvation, suggest that he fought for an ideal rather than for power and politics. He made a vow to give up all the comforts of palace life until he had recaptured all his kingdom from Mughals and his lifelong observance of that vow and continued refusal to accept lucrative offers from Akbar, are the reason he remains revered to this day.
Maharana Pratap died of injuries sustained in a hunting accident at Chavand on January 19, 1597. He was fifty-seven.
