Culcreuch Castle (5)

Above the doorway in the 18th century extension there are two very worn carved stones. On the lower one can be seen the date 1721, above which are the initials JN and ML. While 1721 may be the date of this 18th century wing, it has been suggested that the wing is late 18th century, in which case once again, the date stone belongs to some earlier work and has been moved.

The upper stone is now illegible so far as I can see, but is known to have had a date on it that started with 16, together with traces of arms. This stone presumably came from the keep and was moved here when the old front door was covered over by the extension. If so, it would not be the date of the original castle, which is believed to date back to the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries.
