Finavon Castle (11)

In the 250 years since the castle collapsed, much of the stone has been carried away for use elsewhere. As well as the stone from the castle, the 2 storey outbuildings that formed the courtyard to the west of the castle, together with the courtyard walls themselves, have been almost completely removed. The modern mansion nearby contains a triangular pediment bearing the initials A.L., for Alexander Lindsay, with a shield displaying the Lindsay arms, now much defaced, surmounted by an esquire's helmet. No doubt it contains much more of the old castles stone besides.

In 1843 the Castle was bought by Thomas Gardyne of Middleton, whose descendant, the late Lieut.Colonel Alan D. Greenhill Grardyne, was the laird during the period of the excavations. Through an 18th-century marriage he came of the old Lindsay stock. Col. Greenhill Gardyne died in 1953, leaving the estate to his daughter, Mrs Susan Mazur.
