Castle Stalker (4)

The principal door is at first-floor level in the north wall (on the right), now reached by a stone forestair outside, and also having a defensive machicolation high above (mostly now gone). This access is interesting, for the original forestair reached only to the side of the arched doorway leaving a gap, for security reasons, which could be bridged when required, by a movable timber platform, the socket-holes for which remain. Later this gap was built up, when convenience over-rode defence.

The hall measures 31 by 21 feet, with a fireplace and garderobe in the west wall, and one of its three windows having stone seats. Above was the normal bedroom accommodation. The small watch-chamber is enhanced with an unusually decorative fireplace. The chimney stacks have notably high copes. A small courtyard extends to the south, the only available space on the islet, where the landing place, reached by a small boat, is a few rough steps.
