Elcho Castle Great Hall

Elcho castle stands on the south bank of the Tay, a few miles east of Perth. The building consists of an oblong main block, with towers on 3 corners and an angle turret on the 4th. The ground floor, as so often, is vaulted, to make the building as fireproof as possible to attackers. The lands of Elcho have been owned by the Wemyss family for 550 years, the first recorded charter being dated 1468, and while the castle has stood empty for a considerable time, it is still roofed and in good condition. David Lord Elcho, eldest son of the 5th Earl of Wemyss, took a prominent part in the 1745 rebellion on the side of the Jacobites, raising a regiment of cavalry from the local gentry (and anyone else that could ride a horse!). He was declared a rebel, but his father, having taken no part, kept his land and title, which was eventually passed on to Lord David’s younger brother. The castle is open to paying visitors.
