Pitcaple Castle (11 of 11)

I have known this engraving for a very long time, indeed I have a framed pencil copy of it in my house. It comes from the book called 'The Castellated Architecture of Aberdeenshire' by Sir Andrew Leith Hay of Rannes, published in 1849, from which I have quoted over the last few photos. Apart from being a pleasing, if not always perfectly proportioned (unless people were considerably smaller in those days) piece of artwork, it shows Queen Mary's original thorn tree in the lower right corner, a few years before it fell over.
