They are American Beech tree leaves, I believe, and were photographed on a cold, but snowless winter day about three years ago. The Beech is a tree that exhibits marcescence, by which leaves turn brown and remain attached to the tree through winter and into spring.
Scientists hypothesize that retaining leaves helps protect developing buds from being eaten by herbivores. Retention of the leaves may also help trees start flowing sap earlier in the spring.
