The Race Is On...

Well, not really. These gents in the Model A were turning onto the street for a "ceremonial lap" around what was the original street course in Elgin, Illinois, that was the site of what some historians say were the first organized stock car races in the United States.

The original races took place between 1910 and 1920 and drew thousands of spectators. They were suspended due to safety concerns, after some drivers and spectators lost their lives in accidents, and were held a final time in 1933 to coincide with the Chicago World’s Fair.

This panning shot was taken last month following the 50th annual car show commemorating the races. which ended with the ceremonial lap. The event was sponsored by the Fox Valley (Illinois) Model T Ford Club and the Elgin National Road Race Association. It was processed for Sliders Sunday.
