Meet Maurie and Flaurie

Hungry? Don't feel like cooking? Well, just hop in the car and head on over to Superdawg. It's a place where you can still pull into one of the carports and get your food delivered by a carhop, 1950s style; the grub comes on a tray that hooks on to your half-open car window.

The original Superdawg drive-in was founded in 1948 by Maurie and Flaurie Berman in Chicago's Norwood Park neighborhood, where it is still in owned and operated by their family, I believe. The one shown here is a second unit that opened in 2010 in Wheeling, a Chicago suburb. Not surprisingly, perhaps, the anthropomorphic hot dogs up top are named Maurie and Flaurie.

I'm not certain how the place is doing these days, but according to one story that I read, its business had hardly been affected by Covid-19 restrictions in March during the early days of the virus, while most other restaurants were suffering.
