Diss Corn Hall, Norfolk
Diss Corn Hall, a fine example of a 19th century corn exchange, is located in the heart of the historic market town of Diss, close to the Norfolk/Suffolk border. This centre for the arts is the venue for a wide range of events.
The town council-owned listed building, which was taken over by a community management trust three years ago, was the winner of the social and community category in the Eastern region awards.
Built in 1854, designed by architect George Atkins of Diss in restrained Classic revival style.
It was a place where farmers traded corn. In this rural part of East Anglia, the corn trade was important. I have discovered that cereal were traded there until well ito the 20th century. The Corn Hall has a glass roof (necessary for the scrutiny of corn, but now unstable and screened off).
