Outbreak Chapter 17: Cleanup on Aisle 12
Amy
I’m starting to worry that Brett might have been right about splitting up. Brian and I went into the supermarket together before we split off to get our stuff. He went left to the pharmacy in the back while I went right to find some food. We said we’d meet in a half an hour, tops, but I haven’t seen him where we said we’d meet.
I was in charge of food, per Brett’s instructions, and I kinda thought that would be the easiest of the jobs. As it turns out, not so much! Pretty much every shelf was freaking EMPTY. What did I expect, honestly; it’s not like other people needed food too.
The whole store was a mess too. Shopping carts were strewn throughout the store, bags and cans littered the floor; it was anarchy. Even a few of the aisle signs were crooked, somehow.
I started by grabbing a bag and just stuffed anything I could find in it. I figured that even if I wouldn’t usually eat “vegetarian taco meat substitute,” it would end up being more palatable than no food at all. And believe me, there wasn’t much else to choose from.
The crowds were really brutal, and being as small and generally shy as I am didn’t help. People were grabbing, shoving, shouting; I think quite possibly the only reason why I wasn’t bothered too much was the rifle I had strapped to my back. Yeah, speak softly and carry a big stick; that’s me.
Not everyone was quite so lucky, though. I saw more than a few unconscious people around in the aisles, probably because of a disagreement or something of the like. I shuddered to think that could have been me too. I’m glad I wasn’t quite so picky with the food I got, or else that probably would have been me. It’s pretty much every man for himself in this world right now.
Ok it’s been too long since I’ve seen Brian. I’m calling him…

If you couldn't tell, this is written in the perspective of Amy; that's important to understand if you didn't already.
It feels great to finally get this finished and posted! Outbreak is a project we're looking into focusing on again for a while, so a lot of our content - what little there may be - will be continuing this series.
If you haven't already, check out the whole story. Or, if you've been following the story, it might be helpful to brush up on the story since it's been a while :P
