It is heated to a nice cherry red and then allowed to cool very slowly, which softens the metal. For those who don't know much about tempering, the short of it is, the faster you cool a carbon bearing steal, the harder it becomes (and more brittle), and so cooling it slowly, keeps it soft. There are entire books on this subject, so I will stop there.
