6th April - ‘Foundation Day’ of BJP – Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal

Bhatinda: April 6, 2011.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal National secretary BJP Kisan Morcha, Incharge Jammu and Kashmir said that Our party is the second largest political party in India, came into existence on April 6, 1980, with Atal Behari Vajpayee as its first National President. It registered its first political victory in 1984 Lok Sabha elections by wining just 2 seats. However, in the following 1989 Lok Sabha elections, this party won 88 seats of Parliament. In 1996, BJP became the single-largest political party in the Parliament, with the Congress at its lowest tally ever. BJP created history by assuming power at the centre when Atal Behari Vajpayee became Prime Minister but had to step down after serving the shortest time of thirteen days. In the Lok Sabha elections held in 1998, the BJP-led NDA (National Democratic Alliance) obtained a simple majority and Vajpayee returned as Prime Minister. This coalition government fell in May 1999 when the leader of AIADMK, Jayalalitha, withdrew her support, and fresh elections were again called. In October 1999, the BJP-led NDA won majority seats. The BJP won an all-time high of 183. Again, Atal Behari Vajpayee became Prime Minister for the third time and L.K. Advani as Deputy Prime Minister & Union Home Minister.
