The common shelduck (Tadorna tadorna) is a species of anatidae that belongs to the subfamily of half-gooses (Tadorninae). Half geese are similar to geese in their habit, but they also have features that are characteristic of actual ducks. Especially in older literature one finds the term shelduck for this species.
The shelduck occurs in two separate populations that use slightly different habitats. In Europe, the shelduck is a species that lives mainly on the coast. The Asian population lives mainly in salty and brackish steppe waters. Nevertheless, no subspecies are distinguished for this species.
