Great Crested Grebe < > Haubentaucher

The Great Crested Grebe is a species of bird in the grebe family. About the size of a pintail duck, it is the largest, most common and best-known member of this family of water birds. It breeds on freshwater lakes and larger ponds with reed-covered banks. Particularly striking is its courtship behaviour, which takes place on open water and can be easily observed. The courtship elements include a violent head shake with spreading feathers and the so-called penguin pose, in which the birds lift themselves out of the water by rapidly paddling their feet almost vertically in front of each other. The Great Crested Grebe was Bird of the Year 2001 in Germany and Austria.
