The old town market was probably laid out as a rectangle in the early 12th century. At that time, a wide wet ditch still ran across the area. Immigrant merchants, who came from Westphalia among others, ensured increasing prosperity in the Weichbild, which became the most powerful part of Brunswick in the Middle Ages. The urban ensemble of St. Martin's Church and the Old Town Hall opposite can be regarded as the civic counterpart to the ducal castle district consisting of the cathedral and Dankwarderode Castle. In the course of history, the Old Town Market was the market and trade fair square, place of execution until about 1750, place of assembly during inner-city unrest ("strata"), venue of equestrian games, parades and processions. It was here that the Guelph princes and city lords received the homage of the self-confident city, which was almost independent until 1671.
