Protecting Our Historic Resources Interpretation Sign, Last Chance Mining Museum & Historical Park ~ Juneau, Alaska
The purpose of historic preservation is to save our past & our historic environments. By identifying maintaining, interpreting, & protecting these irreplaceable historic & cultural resources we can safeguard the integrity of our historic sites.
Historic preservation is also an important aspect in the process of community development. It advances an understanding of the factors that contributed to the growth & development of Alaska & tells the story of the struggles of our predecessors as they settled our communities.
The Gastineau Channel Historical Society was first established in 1956 to promote the history of the Gastineau Channel area. It reorganized in 2004 to focus on stabilization & preservation of the historic mining site in Last Chance Basin for the purpose of public access, education, & enjoyment.
The Society's vision for this unique historical setting is to provide for current & future generations an accurate portrayal of the scale of the mining operation & the story of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company & other gold mines in the area that provided a stable economy for Juneau from 1912 to 1944.
In 1995 the Society began operating the Last Chance Mining Museum & Historical Park. Walking this historic site in search of its historical significance requires a bit of imagination. Not unlike many historic sites, most of the original buildings & structures have been removed or suffer from years of deterioration. The Society volunteers have spent considerable effort to preserve a few of the remaining buildings & structure that give sense of the historic mining activities that took place here.
It has been the policy of the City & Borough of Juneau to identify & protect our community's historic & archaeological resources. Juneau's Comprehensive Plan recognizes that. "The general character of Juneau as a whole is enhanced by the very existence of these historic neighborhoods."
The Mission of the Society is to advance the cultural significance of the gold mining era & preserve for future generations this remarkable piece of CBJ real estate. The Society works in collaboration with the Juneau-Douglas City Musuem to provide a board base of understanding of the great gold mines that supported the community for many years,
By preserving & promoting the rich history of Last Chance Basin we can honor the people who lived here & whore families stayed to build the Juneau-Douglas community.
