Logs from Francois Lassell's House 1790c. - Monroe County Historical Society ~ Monroe, Michigan
The Partial wall re-constructed here is the only remaining fragment of a traditional "piece sur piece" house of French construction. This style used short logs which were set into vertical posts. It once stood on the north side of the River Raisin with the River Raisin Settlement. It was later moved, modernized & eventually razed in the early 1970's. Fortunately some of it was saved. The Navarre-Anderson Trading Post, located at the museum's Michigan Territorial Park, is of similar construction & age. The Monroe County proclamation of 1817 specifically mentions this house by name. It states that the seat of Justice for the new county is to located at a spot "not exceeding two miles from the house in which Francois Lasselle resides>"
