Off road in a 1966 Pontiac GTO

The title is accurate, but a bit misleading. Yes, my brother's ‘66 GTO IS off the road, but not by much. I'm ON the road taking this pic... 58 years ago. This is the ONLY time this car went "off road".

Taken on August 12, 1966, eight days into our three week long cross country trip. The journey was my brother's idea, a chance to really "break in" the car,,,,, and a "last fling" for me, fresh out of high school and two months after we got home... into the Coast Guard for four years.

The GTO was still fairly new... just below 8.000 miles on the odometer when this was taken. Its new timing gear has less than 500 miles on it, the original one having "gone south" in Jackson, Wyoming, leaving us stuck at a ranch in Bondurant while a new one was installed at a garage in town. Because Jackson was incredibly busy, totally jammed with visitors, no accommodation was available anywhere in town. A nice lady at the chamber of commerce fixed us up with a place to stay for a few days... the Lawson Ranch in Bondurant, 35 miles down the road. With the car fixed, we hit the road again and swung south into Utah, The GTO is gone now, but I still have a piece of it... the original timing gear, with the tips of its teeth all bent over... leaning in one direction.

I was eighteen when I took this photo. Looking at it now I can't help wondering where all that time has gone.

Taken with my first 35mm camera, an Agfa Selecta with a non-interchangeable 45mm lens, Kodachrome 64 film, scanned on my old (but still working great) Epson Perfection 2450 scanner.
