Warwick, Rhode Island cyclists

Taken around 1895 near or in Warwick. The way these two are dressed indicates they might possibly be members of a cycling club. The "Penny-Farthing" bike on the right has an unusual configuration... the smaller wheel is in front, much like the "American Star" bicycle that was produced in the 1880's. This wheel arrangement made it less dangerous to ride, there being far less chance that the rider would "do a header" over the handlebars when hitting an obstruction or pothole. The coats they're wearing could be club attire, but the mustaches were just plain popular back then.

This image is from a collection of "5" x 8" glass plate negatives given to me years ago. The plate was photographed with a Nikon D60, back lighting with a table lamp, with a ground glass screen placed between the plate and the lamp.
