Fallow Deer fawn, Newcastle, Texas
Here's the newest member of the herd...born about 18 hours before this pic was taken. She (not named yet) is a bit undersized and cannot reach mom's teats. She'll be bottle fed and spend nights indoors until she grows a bit. We have colostrum on hand here and are always ready for situations like this. She spends time outdoors, where mom is very attentive, licks her all over, and they both communicate through "peeping". The other does are very curious, constantly "inspecting" the new arrival.
There are bobcat tracks around the property and certain trees have evidently been used as claw scratching "stations" by these night time intruders. The adult herd members keep watch and "bark" if anything arouses their suspicion, so any new arrivals outside are well protected.
This is a quick phone pic taken in low lighting provided by a variety of light sources of various color temperatures, so was a "dog" as far as color goes... needed much tweaking to render it fit for posting. Overall quality is a bit rough because an image download problem with my phone causes me to have to send the pic to myself in an email at low quality.
