JBR100F

This undated picture of Phillips of Shiptonthorpe JBR100F was taken in the mid to late 1980s, probably in the roadside layby near Gilberdyke, where Phillips kept a selection of his fleet. When new to Sunderland Corporation in January 1968, it was one of ten Bristol RELL6Gs with Metro Cammell B47D+19 bodies, which formed part of a fleet of 80 similar buses, most of which were Strachan bodied Leyland Panthers. These 80 buses created quite a stir at the time and not only for their radically different appearance, with American style trapezoid windows. They accompanied the wholesale introduction of driver only operated services, with innovative fast fare payment systems. These comprised flat fares, discounted for pre-purchased tokens, and token operated automatic ticket machines to reduce the driver's workload and speed boarding times. JBR100F was one of eight of the ten, which later passed from Tyne & Wear PTE to Burnley & Pendle Transport as Seddon Pennine RU replacements. It was Burnley & Pendle that removed the centre door, making the bus a single door 50 seater.
