midterm

This is a very personal piece of work for me. My assignment was to draw like an artist of my choosing, and I chose Max Beckmann. The first box of the triptych depicts life while my parents were happily married, God was in our lives, and my siblings and I were happy, playing soccer together. The center piece depicts what happened after they got divorced. My mother entered an extremely abusive relationship with a certain Mark Zapata. He molested my little sister at 12, took advantage of me at 19, got me to smoke crack with him, beat my mother senseless countless times, and constantly verbally and emotionally abused my mother. He tore my family apart and I became a drug addict, my brother and sister potheads with no ambition, and my mother a slave to a man who did not even pay the bills. She could not really see us or talk to us because Mark would interfere. All of us were hurt that my mom stayed with him after the things he did to us as well as herself. I had finally come to peace with it all, but recently, to my surprise and utter joy, she left Mark and took my half-brother, Xavier, with her. CPS was involved and she was afraid she would lose custody of my four year old brother. Now life is great: my sister is married with a ten month old baby, and Xavier is enrolled in school and living with his young cousins at my aunt's house with my mother, and my aunt's husband. The future is bright, I am clean, and I have a great man by my side. This is depicted to the far right, except there wasn't space for Daniel. My cats are the loves of my life and they were there through thick and thin, so they are depicted at the top watching over me through the good years and the bad. They are Alexis, Susie, Bianca, and Valentina from left to right. Hope you enjoy my work!
