Remnants

IES Vienna, Spring 2018

Bratislava, Slovakia

Vienna, Austria, my host city, and Bratislava, Slovakia are the two closest capitals cities in all of Europe. Less than an hour away by train, I was not prepared for the great disparity I would encounter between these two countries. Although Bratislava is indeed Slovakia's capital city, and I was in the center of all the main tourist attractions, you couldn't help but feel a weight, a heaviness that engulfed the city. This was the first time I experienced the effect that a country's history has on its people, even in modern day. Vienna, a metropolitan city with streets speckled with marvelous statues and adorned with magnificent churches and with its famous golden Staatsoper marking the center, Bratislava seemed a world away rather than an hour. The remnants of communism still hung in the air in Bratislava, which became more and more evident as I walked up and down the tiny, narrow, winding, cobblestoned streets. This photo I believe shows what it feels like to step into this quiet, solemn city.
