Forgotten songs

IFSA-Butler: University of New South Wales, Spring 2018

Sydney, Australia

This 3D art called “Forgotten songs” was my introduction to Sydney, Australia. It represents how Sydney’s animals have adapted and evolved to co-exist with the increasing urbanization and each cage contains the song of a bird that is either extinct or threatened within central Sydney. While exploring the back neighbors and hidden gems within the city, I discovered speakeasies, botanical gardens, The Rocks, the Sydney Opera House, and this alley. Hidden within the curvy streets, a hush falls on pedestrians when they turn the corner to see the bird cages and the simple gold plaque in the ground: “Forgotten songs.” I slowed my pace and looked up. Footsteps and the intertwining songs of birds were the only sounds that filled the air. Getting to a new place and one that you are about to live in for 5 months is exciting and fast-paced, and you’re filled with nerves and pure elation. But slowing down under these cages forced me to take a breath, to stop and think, and let the realization sink in that I was about to embark on an adventure of a lifetime.
