St Augustine's on High Street

On the 22nd of August 1900 Glasgow's most famous son Charles Rennie Mackintosh married his sweetheart Margaret Macdonald in St Augustine's Episcopal Church in Dumbarton.

The marriage between 32-year-old Mackintosh and 35-year-old Margaret is believed to have caused considerable consternation at the time among Glasgow's societal circles - especially because Mackintosh had previously been engaged to marry his employer's sister, Jessie Keppie.

Margaret and Charles were not only in a relationship on a romantic level but also on a professional and artistic one, and their work together would see them reach their respective creative zeniths, with their mutual love manifesting itself in their marvellously original furniture, buildings and interiors.
