Dumbarton Jail

The foundation stone for the County Buildings and Jail was laid on 19/07/1824. The architects were James Gillespie

and Robert Scott. The building was used as a jail until 1883 then as a County Council store until becoming derelict when new County Buildings were opened in 1965. The jail was demolished in 1973, leaving only the gateway (above), and some stone fragments built into nearby rubble walls.
