This image of a fossil stromatolite from the Trezona Formation at Enorama Creek, South Australia, shows layers that were formed as cyanobacterial microbial mat communities grew in a shallow, coastal marine environment. The layers that are visible are the result of subtle differences in the mineral content of sediments there were bound together by the mat over time. Once the rock is weathered, these layers are much easier to see. The coin shown for scale in this image is 2.5 centimeters in diameter.
