Autumn tree

In January 2021, I did something extraordinary. Using a developer I prepared, at a dilution ratio of 1 : 1, in January 2019—in other words, a very exhausted developer—I stand developed a film for 10 hours (!). It was a cold night with an ambient temperature of 10°C. So in order to compensate for the low temperature and the exhaustion of the developer, I warmed the solution up to 40°C before pouring it to the tank. I agitated the reel perhaps for one minute or so and let it stand, and I went to bed.

The next morning, or 10 hours later, the temperature of the developer was down to 5°C. To my pleasant surprise, this experiment produced some beautiful images. If you are interested, please check “The Remains of the Day” and “A winter tree 2021” I uploaded on February 2, 2021.

Some time after that, I decided that the developer has seen the end of its life. On May 15, 2021, I prepared a fresh solution, this time undiluted. I developed several rolls according to the recommended time and temperature. And in September 2022, after developing 11 rolls using the same developer in an ordinary, recommended way, I decided to semi-stand develop the 12th roll for 30 minutes at 24.5°C. Images came out fine. On October 16, 2022, I semi-stand developed the 13th roll this time for 40 minutes at 19°C. The film came out absolutely under-developed. I got a very thin roll of film. Almost transparent. I tried rescuing some images, but doing so also highlighted dust and scratches that are usually hidden.

I wanted to find out if the developer had come to the end of its life, or it simply needed more time to process the film.

For the next roll, the 14th roll, I let the film stand for 10 hours, during which time the temperature dropped from 25°C initially to 14°C eventually. This time, I got a fairly dense negative. Judging from scanned images, the film was apparently over-developed. But some images were usable. This photo is one of those usable shots. Murky and grainy, but I like it.
