Log House

A mystery! An image from the personal collection of late Ohio Historical Society curator Donald Hutslar, who snapped a photo of this photo circa 1973. I know nothing about the house or the family. There appears to be a low ridge at lower right, which suggests a location somewhere in a hilly part of the country—maybe Appalachia, but it's impossible to be sure. Unsurprisingly, a Google reverse-image search turned up nothing.

It's a standard enough single-pen home—likely not especially old (perhaps from the later part of the nineteenth century), with logs that are nearly round and not trimmed to be flush at the corners. Note the rafter mortises cut into the top log. The upper part of the chimney appears to be brick. But what make the picture a gem is the family: No cold, blank stares here!
