DAY IN THE SUN?
Whilst the sun might be shining on 'South Durham Malleable No5' in the colliery yard at Beamish Museum, its last 'day in the sun' was nearly 50 years ago when it ran at the Tanfield Railway in the 1970s - who knows when or if this locomotive will operate again?
Historically No5 is a bit of a mongrel probably being built by the South Durham Iron & Steel Co at their Stockton works in 1873 using a mix of parts from another locomotive, possibly a Black Hawthorn, and parts from general spares stock. The boiler on the locomotive is thought to be a replacement supplied by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn in the 1950s.
