2999 EARDINGTON 2727 DE-

EDWARDIAN ELEGANCE

GWR Saint Class 2999 'Lady of Legend', recreated by the Great Western Society, Didcot, climbs towards Eardington Summit, Severn Valley Railway, on 5th May 2021. Lady of Legend will be running at the Severn Valley Railway until 7th May.

The original Great Western Railway 2900 Class 'Saints' were built between 1902 - 1913 with the last example, 2920 'Saint David' being withdrawn from service in 1953. In 1924 2925 'Saint Martin' was extensively rebuilt to form the prototype of the GWR 4900 'Hall' Class of mixed traffic locomotive. The Great Western Society were able to recreate the Saint Class 'Lady of Legend' by initially rescuing Hall Class 4942 'Maindy Hall' from Barry scrapyard in 1974 and 'reverse engineering' it to a Saint Class, a mammoth task which was completed in 2019.
