SR ‘Merchant Navy’ class locomotive, 35006 'Peninsular & Oriental SN Co' carries a headboard and Royal Ensigns to mark 100 years of the Merchant Navy as it passes Hailes Abbey Halt GWSR, with the 10.00 Toddington - Cheltenham service on Tuesday 3rd September. This day was chosen to also commemorate the sinking of the transatatlantic liner SS Athenia by German U boat,on 3rd September 1939, the first Merchant Navy ship to be lost in WWII.
