MERLIN 27
2 AMMONOOSUC MWR
Mount Washington Cog Railway No 2 'Ammonoosuc' (Manchester Locomotive Works 1875) propels coach No6 towards the Base Station for the first train of the day on 24th September 2015.
The locomotive is essentially two engines mounted on a single frame driving two seperate cog wheels which mesh with the centrally mounted ladder rack. The locomotive uses conventional steam to power these engines during the ascent. Descending, air is used, being fed into the cylinders which compress the air thereby braking the locomotives descent. The coach remains uncoupled from the locomotive and is braked seperately.
The 'Cog' only operates 1 steam service per day, the first trip of the day, with the remainder of trips being operated by their fleet of biodiesels.
