Mosaic floor from the Baptistery of San Giovanni (Canosa di Puglia, Italy)
In the sixth century, Bishop Sabinus of Canosa commissioned a monumental baptistery that was to be built next to the basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which had been constructed in the fourth century. The baptistery was dedicated to the Baptist.
The baptistery was centrally planned and adorned with mosaic decoration. A large portico led to the entrance of the baptistery.
Seen here are remains of a mosaic floor that once decorated the baptistery complex: tessere form geometric patterns.
